The
chapter starts with China whereto Chinese emperor Qianlong that rejected
Britain wanting a less restricted trading relationship in 1793. Qianlong believed that there was no need to
import the manufactures of outside barbarians. In 1912, China’s imperial state
collapsed during the time Great Britain was a key player in economics and
politics. This led China to become weak
and was a major change for China becoming highly civilized and then losing it
all. This led China to have issues on land, small farms, unemployment,
impoverishment, misery, and starvation. The western influence is now being
pressed around the world. China is then involved by building the relationship
with Europe leading to the Opium wars. The comparison of the Ottoman Empire and
china was made being an Islamic neighbor in the geographical area of Europe.
Both of these countries were not under direct colonial rule, however was
destroyed while there was a global power change. Japan is then rising in power
during the nineteenth century. Japan also challenged the European power by
confronting U.S. Matthew Perry demanding Japan to open up to normal relations
