Week 13
Chapter 23
Strayer starting with the picture of a space view of the Earth has many meanings behind it. I believe
the photo represents how if we look from an outside perspective we are one, but getting closer we are
divided and have different views. Strayer talks about Anthropocene which broken up means Human
Era. this Era is where Human history is also affecting Earths history. As humans are progressing, we
are creating products that are either destroying or replacing the Earth's material. We as a society is
playing the role of God and controlling what is made or destroyed. The prime example is our cars
where we are releasing pollution into the atmosphere. However, we are changing that by making
hybrids or fully electric cars. Humans are also recreating land masses like island, rivers, hills, and
many more. We have even built cities on top of landfills that hit its maximum capacity. The chapter
then goes in showing the different investment powers in a global sense. U.S. was the biggest to invest
a lot of money as well a European countries because of colonial past. This may help other countries
out by boosting their economic with work, but sometimes may be even worst. With the Chinese, they
built a hydro power plant to make electricity and promise the people around the plant boost in work.
this was not the case because China sent their own workers to work on the plant leaving the people
around the plant to work through entertainment like alcohol, food, and prostitution. The chapter has a
chart that shows the wealth correlated with life expectancy, and accessible to cars and phones. It
showed that the countries thats people have low income die younger, have more children that also die
young, and have less electronics. with the countries with higher income, the people live longer and
less children that live longer as well, and have more electronics. the chapter ends with the killing of
culture and how some are changing that by expressing more of there culture in daily life. the example
given was a Barbie doll dressed in muslim outfit. Barbies use to be only American but now has
change to express other cultures.
