Week 9

Second Wave of European Conquests and Documents 

Industrial Revolution created a capitalistic culture that turned into the European second-wave of       

colonial initiatives. Europeans found a beneficial way to boost their economy by foreign investments 

and global imperialism. The Industrial Revolution led Europeans to believe they were superior and 

the other cultures were uncivilized like animals. Social Darwinism was used to explain the Europeans 

superiority.  they viewed different places a feminine being weak and incapable.  The Europeans were 

still taking over socially weak areas while competing against each other making then the "Great 

Power." Vietnam lifestyle was affected negatively with the violence disturbing their peace. While 

others like Africa cooperated creating status, employment, wealth, and inspiration for education. this 

also led to rebellions due to the same reason as well as loss in religion like the Indian Rebellion.  

African women had more responsibility for food due to the men becoming more distanced from their 

families. Before Africa was colonized, men took control over cash crop production. The impact of the 

Europeans is debatable with one side saying they integrated Afro-Asian into a bigger network of 

exchange, while others say that the modernization did not happen as well as an industrial 

breakthrough in the colonized places.  Colonial rule was the contribution of racism, economics, social 

problems, and culture. Christianity took hold as it appealed to most parts of society. Christianity also 

caused opposition by challenging traditional practices. Hinduism was more defined and making India 

have an identity that would emerge as a single nation. The Scramble for Africa was when Europe saw 

Africa to be a profitable land they can colonize. Many Europeans then rushed to conquer Africa and 

split the land to claim the land before anyone else did.  The part where Vietnam was affected 

becoming violent when they were peaceful beforehand was one of the effects that i think about 

because growing up hearing how after the europeans came there was a lot of change that the 

Vietnamese didn't want to do but had to comply. then after they were done with Vietnam they just left 

making Vietnam a shithole country making the people look at communism as the best answer. if the 

europeans just helped protect the country in the first place we may not have a Communist Vietnam.

Chapter 21  In chapter 21, the book talks about the two main communistic countries that rose. These countries  were Russia and China. In the definition of Communism from Marx, there were only two ways to  make change to capitalism in where the people come together to reform or to violently act for the  change. however, for a Country to rebel and come communist, the country has to industrialize. This is  where Russia and China become interesting because they were not industrialized but rather more  traditional but were able to skip the step and become communist. Week 13

Chapter 23  Strayer starting with the picture of a space view of the Earth has many meanings behind it. I believe  the photo represents how if we look from an outside perspective we are one, but getting closer we are  divided and have different views.  Strayer talks about Anthropocene which broken up means Human  Era. this Era is where Human history is also affecting Earths history. As humans are progressing, we  are creating products that are either destroying or replacing the Earth's material. We as a society is  playing the role of God and controlling what is made or destroyed. The prime example is our cars  where we are releasing pollution into the atmosphere. However, we are changing that by making  hybrids or fully electric cars. Humans are also recreating land masses like island, rivers, hills, and  many more. Week 2

Chapter 13  In class, we talk with Europeans were starting to to explore and why they had an advantage. At first, I thought they were exploring to see what else is out in the world. In reality, they wanted to find a  better way to get into the Indian ocean trade. I then remembered back to learning about Columbus  and how Spain wanted to find a way to India for spices. I didi not know that the Indian Ocean trade  was also called the Sea Road even though it is self explanatory.  We then went on about how China  was unmotivated by going to The Americas because they were good where they were.
